Don Scipione, president of Acme Express, Inc., was not blind to the benefits of the empowerment zone.
In 1998, Mr. Scipionemoved his software and web site development company from the periphery of the zone to a larger, 7,000-square-foot site he bought and re-furbished on Prospect Avenue. He received $210,000 in loans and grants from the empowerment zone program.
"For us, the location was perfect," Mr. Scipione said. "It is close to downtown and the free-ways, and it has worked out well because it has given us the chance to work with some of the nearby public elementary schools," where Mr. Scipione and his employees have helped teachers, principals, and students learn to use computers and software.
"We have really enjoyed being part of the community, and having the extra space has really helped us grow," Mr. Scipione said. |
