Acme Express Inc., a software firm in Cleveland, is designing and testing an Internet school newspaper to improve student performance at four inner-city elementary schools.

Students will use the web-based publishing tool to post assignments and articles on an Internet web site, www.clevelandschool.net.

The program will automatically put the information in a newspaper format on the web.

Don Scipione, president of Acme Express, said he hopes the newspaper will not only improve reading and writing skills but build confidence and self-esteem. Mr. Scipione said Acme Express received a $50,000 small business innovation research grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop the newspaper and train students and faculty how to use it. Microsoft Corp., also donated $90,000 worth of software for the project.

This week, the four elementary schools -- Charles Orr, Louis Pasteur, Giddings and Miles Standish -- will begin posting their work on the Internet.
